Filipino checkers or also known as Dama, is a board game with 12 pieces are given to both players. Both players must defend their pieces by either capturing the pieces or blocking the attack of their opponent.
Mechanics
The game requires only two players, each player has at 12 pieces each and must be placed on the board. The movement of the pieces are either diagonally or forward, they cannot move the pieces backwards. The players has at least one king on which it can move diagonally in any direaction and jump over any number of pieces that are in a straight line. The more pieces being captured will be declared the winner. A variation of this is the Pergana where the first one whose pieces get captured first wins.
How to Play Dama!
Place 12 dama pieces on the dark squares of the first three rows of an 8 by 8 board chess or dama board
Step 1
Take turns moving their pieces diagonally forward. Capture an opponent’s piece by jumping over it to an empty square. Multiple pieces can be captured if the squares behind the pieces are empty.
Step 2
When a piece reaches the last row, it becomes a “dama” and can move diagonally in any direction. The player who captures all the opponent’s pieces or blocks their moves wins!
